On not breaking things - like refrigerators and air conditioners

All,

Quick tips, in case you didn't know:

1. Running your refrigerator/freezer at the coldest temperature setting for long periods of time can actually break the unit. Yes, it will actually freeze up! The motor and chilling coils will actually freeze and break the refrigerator/freezer.

a. Proper setting is about halfway on the dial in your unit – if the dial goes 1-5, set it to 3. If the dial goes 1-9, set it to 5 or 6. This way you chill the food but not the motor.

2. The other thing that can freeze is your air conditioner. While we’ve had a very warm summer here in Philly, as the weather starts to cool down, it’s important to adjust the temperature setting on the A/C unit. Much in the same way a refrigerator chills, so does the A/C, and if you leave it at the coldest setting when it cools down outside, the motor inside will freeze.

a. It’s best to set it between 68-72 if you prefer a cooler experience. Anything lower should only be run for short period of time, otherwise you may be soon calling the office and asking for a new A/C unit.

Today's tips are brought to you by the letters A & C, the number 62 and the color ice blue.

Cheers,
RD Will

WELCOME!!!

Welcome to all the new residents of Triangle (TRI) and Podiatry (POD). And WELCOME BACK to all of those returning to the TRIPOD for another year. We're lucky to have you and we want to do everything we can (within reason and the law) to make your stay with us enjoyable.

We have uploaded the following three documents for your convenience:
A few things to be aware of whether you are new or not to Grad Housing starting 8/1/10:
  • Office Hours are M-F: 8AM-7PM, Sat-Sun: 10AM-2PM (except during University Holidays)
  • There is a $10 charge for lock-outs, but your first two of the year are free
  • POD ON CALL: 215-518-7673, 7PM-8AM M-Thur, 7PM Fri-8AM Mon
  • TRI ON CALL: 215-910-2194, 7PM-8AM M-Thur, 7PM Fri-8AM Mon
  • TRIANGLE - we are working on getting a new grill for the complex within the next few weeks.
  • PODIATRY - there's a new elevator code. If you don't have it, check your Welcome Packet or ask at the Security Desk or Housing Desk. The code can only be given to students that live in the Podiatry complex.
Let us know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions; email us at tugradhousing@gmail.com

And now for something completely different - one of the most amazing "Dancing in the Rain" videos you'll ever see!

RD Will

It's Closing Time!

All,

Good morning. Amazingly enough, the end is nearly here. After 10 great months, leases end on Monday, May 31. If you haven't scheduled a checkout yet, please do so asap. Here's the numbers to call:

PODIATRY - 215-518-7673

TRIANGLE - 215-910-2194

Failure to sign up for a checkout may result in you being charged $25 for not signing up, and failure to move out on May 31 may result in the locks being changed to your apartment (and you being charged for that, too).

I don't want to play the bad cop here, so please sign up for a checkout. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.

Cheers,
Will & The Graduate Housing Staff

NEW HOUSING SELECTION STARTS MONDAY!!!

All,

Howdy! This is a friendly reminder that new housing selection begins this Monday, Mar 22, at 10AM. At that time you can log into your MYHOUSING account and use the SWSA (student web self-assign) to select a different apartment than the one you currently live in.

If you have any questions or problems with logging in or being able to register for the 2010-11 year, please direct them to Helen Ball in the Housing office, at 215-204-7184.

Have a terrific day and weekend. It’s going to be beautiful and in the 70's. If you're studying, why not do it at Franklin Square or elsewhere in the city? Enjoy!

Cheers,
Will

Who own's the sad, purple bike?

Hey Triangle folk,

Do you own a purple mountain bike that is leaning against the light post behind the grill in the courtyard at Triangle? If so, please remove it, as the bike looks like it needs to be put out of its misery. Seriously, it needs a little TLC! If you'd like you can donate it to the Maintenance Dept. Otherwise, please take care to remove it or it will be removed within the next couple of days.

Thanks and have a great day!

RD Will

Fire Alarm Testing at Triangle: Mon, Sept 14 & Tues, Sept 15

All,

Good evening. On Monday, Sept. 14 & Tuesday, Sept. 15, representatives from University Housing & Residential Life will be testing smoke detectors and other life safety devices as part of the University Fire Safety Protection plan.

These representatives will be entering individual apartments to test smoke alarms. Also, they will be sounding building alarms. You DO NOT NEED TO VACATE during the alarm.

Please let myself, Emad, Jay or Tiana know if you have any questions or concerns about these tests.

Also, a previous email I sent out said that the tests were taking place on Aug. 14 & Aug. 15. This was a typo.

Cheers,
RD Will
